GB&U: Nats Left High and Dry

RESULT: Nats shut out by D-Backs 5-0.

GOOD: Tough to take a positive out of this one, but we'll go with the relief corps. Brian Sanches and Charlie Manning, thrust into important roles in the bullpen despite their lack of major league experience, both pitched very well Sunday. Both pitched two innings with no runs. Sanchez allowed one hit and no walks, striking out three. Manning, doing his best Joel Hanrahan impression, did not allow a hit, but issued three walks. He struck out two.

BAD: Elijah Dukes. 0-for-4. .148 on the season. Pew!

UGLY: Shut out for the second straight day. Ten hits in 18 innings. Only two base runners in scoring position all day--both with two outs. Webb and Haren can do this to a lot of teams, but the Nats simply were overmatched--no--dominated over the weekend.

Honorable Mention UGLY: Shawn Hill. He ain't right. the only pitch he could throw was the fastball. He had no control over the curve or change-up, sure signs that his elbow is really giving him problems. He's a fighter and going to take the ball any time it's offered to him. But if they can't find out what's wrong with his elbow, you gotta wonder what damage he's doing pitching through it like this. Just remember this game later on if he has to have season-ending surgery in the near future.

NEXT GAME: Off on Monday. The Nats host the St. Louis Cardinals Tuesday night at 7:05 pm at Nationals Park. Odalis perez (2-4, 4.14) takes on Kyle Lohse (5-2, 4.02)
