According to Nats Journal, catcher Jesus Flores is suffering from a stress fracture in his right shoulder, and will miss most, if not all, of the rest of the season.
Flores, 24, was coming into his own this season, batting .311/.382/.522 with four homers and 15 RBIs in 103 plate appearances. He was also developing a good rapport with his pitching staff, as his Catching ERA was 5.12, better than that of backups Josh Bard (5.65) and Wil Nieves (6.54).
He had also significantly improved his throwing, catching 42% of would-be base stealers.
Presumably, Bard and Nieves will continue in Flores' absence. Nieves is hitting .281/.324/.328, Bard a paltry .174/.208/.261.
Who'da thunk Nieves would be the Nats' hitting catcher this season?
