Shrek to Join Donkey in DC

The Nats are expected to recall OF Kevin Mench from Triple-A Syracuse today to take the roster spot of Nyjer Morgan, who was placed -- apparently against his wishes -- on the 15-day D.L. due to soreness in his right hip.

Mench, 32, is a seven year MLB veteran who has not played in the bigs since 2008 with Toronto.  He spent 2009 in Japan, and has toiled at Syracuse this season, posting a slash line of .249/.331/.338 with three homers and 40 RBIs in 326 plate appearances.

Mench, who arguably has the biggest head in baseball, will mostly provide a right-handed bat off the bench.

The Nationals transferred J.D. Martin to the 60-day D.L. to open up a spot on the 40-man roster for Mench.  The move effectively ends Martin's season.  The pitcher is on the D.L. with back spasms.

With Morgan on the D.L., Roger Bernadina will move over to center and Michael Morse will get the bulk of the playing time in right field.

INF Danny Espinosa was moved up from Double-A Harrisburg to Syracuse after tearing up AA the last couple of weeks, including a three-home run game earlier this week.  Espinosa is hitting .262 with 18 homers and 54 RBI this season, with a .798 OPS.

Funny junk. Forgot about Mench's nickname. Not that it matters too much to anyone but Mench that he got the call but I hope he is able to make a contribution while he's here.
